Chapter 1
Kayleigh and John lay on the bed facing each other, talking about work and reflecting on the past. They had been going out for a year and lived together for three weeks. This morning Kayleigh had realised that she took the whole blanket, leaving John to freeze. She laughed and apologised, John wasn't too pleased but saw the funny side. Then he looked at the time and alarmingly pushed the covers off himself as he was going to be late for training. "Damn," John said jumping out of bed running into the bathroom to get ready.
Kayleigh laughed at him as he ran around the room like a headless chicken. John all of a sudden stopped and stared at Kayleigh scratching his head, "I forgot to pack my bag!"
"Haha, don't worry I did it for you before," Kayleigh said, "I knew this was going to happen, you're so predictable!" Kayleigh now saw an embarrassed John, "Anyway
John ran down the stairs then back up and gave Kayleigh a kiss, "Thanks," then ran back downstairs again. Kayleigh heard the front door slam, smiling to herself she decided to get out of bed and get changed. It was soon to be John's birthday so Kayleigh decided to throw John a surprise birthday party. First she made herself breakfast and then headed out to the shops.
Hours later John came back from training but there was no sign of Kayleigh. He looked around the house to see if she was around but she was nowhere, "Shopping!" he thought to himself so he sat on the sofa watching TV whilst waiting for Kayleigh. Kayleigh had just finished shopping, as she was loading the bags, time had occurred to her, "Eek, 5 hours, he'll be at home. What am I suppose to do with all this?" she asked staring at the bags of shopping she held.
Back at home John heard a car; he looked out the window and saw that it was a Mini. He smiled and walked out of the house. Kayleigh saw John and immediately closed her boot.
"Hey," John said giving her a kiss "What did you buy?" John asked her.
Kayleigh thought for a while but not too long, "Erm...a top." She then thought please please don't ask to see it.
"Can I see it?" John asked.
Shoot Kayleigh thought, "Erm...yeah...sure!"
John took Kayleigh's hand as they entered the house. She was thinking of ways to get out of this hole. John lay on the bed propping himself up with his right arm. Kayleigh went into the bathroom to get changed, after a couple of minutes she shyly walked out. John used his finger asking Kayleigh to turn a full circle.
"Haven't I seen that top before?" John asked.
"No I don't think so the other one I have is white." Kayleigh said.
John pulled an uncertain face, "Okay then must be me. Looks great anyway."
Kayleigh pulled a relieved smile then blushed, "Thanks." She went back into the bathroom to change back into the clothes she was originally wearing.
John decided to take Kayleigh out to dinner, as their fridge was emptier than a white piece of paper. As they were walking into the car John opened the door for Kayleigh. Once he reversed out of the driveway some girls started screaming and chasing after the car, "Oh my God...John...John...I LOVE YOU! Aah!!" numerous fans shouted, screaming their hearts out. Kayleigh and John smiled at each other finding it rather hilarious.
Later on the journey Kayleigh and John were caught in traffic. Luckily they had left earlier so there was still lots of time before they had to be there. Whilst they were caught in traffic, John brought up the subject about his birthday. He smiled at Kayleigh hoping that she would give in to his 'melting' eyes and tell him what she had planned.
"Sooo...what you doing for my birthday," John said pulling a puppy dog face.
"Huh? Oh sorry...yeah I forgot...your birthday," Kayleigh said sarcastically.
"Don't kid around with me, now...what are you doing? Pleeeaassee?" John pleaded.
"Nope not going to work, Mister," Kayleigh said turning away jokingly.
John crossed him arms and turned away from Kayleigh sarcastically, "Fine..." John said, "Pleeaassee?"
Then the traffic started moving again, "Oh, well won't you look at that?! Time to drive." Kayleigh said. She laughed quietly when John huffed and turned his attention back to driving.
"So where are we going to eat?" Kayleigh asked facing John who was still looking at the road.
"Sorry, it's a surprise but I'll tell you if you tell me what your planning," John said trying to catch her out.
"Ha. No. Your tricks aren't going to work on me," Kayleigh exclaimed, laughing evilly.
John stuck his tongue out at her. She laughed evilly once more at his childishness. They arrived at a restaurant, with beautiful architecture and pretty colour co-ordination. Kayleigh looked at the building in amazement, John looked at her, happy that she was delighted but this moment soon was short lived as some photographers were taking pictures of the couple and the reporters bombarded them with questions.
"John, John, John over here!" the photographers said simultaneously, each of them flooding him with questions.
John simply took Kayleigh by the hand and led Kayleigh into the restaurant. He apologised, "Sorry about that!"
"It's empty! Why is there only one table?" Kayleigh said looking at John.
"I reserved the whole restaurant just for us. So we could get some privacy but that idea was squashed."
Kayleigh didn't answer but pecked John on the lips as a thank you. John checked his suit pockets to make sure nothing was stolen by the press. He smiled to himself, pulling Kayleigh's chair out for her.
"There you go M'am," John said with a smile.
Kayleigh laughed at his gentlemen like manner. When John went to sit down Kayleigh asked, "So what are we ordering?"
"Don't worry m'lady, I ordered all your favourites. Especially for you." John explained.
As quite music was creating atmosphere the couple were talking about random subjects. The food arrived as they happily ate but John had problems adjusting to using, what was to him, unusual cutlery..
"Here let me show you," Kayleigh said showing how to hold them, "God, your useless." Kayleigh said then gave him an apologetic look.
"Thanks," was the reply that John gave.
After a few minutes John finally got the hang of it. He flashed Kayleigh a smile as he picked up his food, Kayleigh returned the smile. The room was getting dark, with candles as the only source of light. Stars twinkled through the window, the table draped with a velvet cloth and a centre piece filled with red and white roses. John looked Kayleigh in the eyes, holding her hands, whilst rubbing her palm with his thumb. He passed her a dozen roses, to symbolise how much she meant to him, then walked over to her. He said proudly, whilst watching the sparkle in Kayleigh's eyes and said, "Kayleigh I have something to tell you." Suddenly he is interrupted by a heard of paparazzi, 'Argh,' he said in his head.
The paparazzi constantly snapped pictures of the two, making things worse for John, they asked if he was about to propose to Kayleigh. John was so annoyed that he grabbed Kayleigh by the hand - whilst trying to not hurt her - threw money on the table as a tip for the waiter and went to the car. Never had Kayleigh seen John like this but it was the first time for everything. She wondered whether he was going to propose, the thought played nicely in her mind but also annoyed her by that fact she probably wouldn't find out until John was ready. He was about to open up to her but then the stupid paparazzi ruined everything. She stayed calm though, thinking of ways to calm John down but she didn't know how to approach him when he is like this. John couldn't believe the promise he was going to make to Kayleigh was wrecked. There was no way he was going to continue with this now. The momentum has tarnished. Every word exiting his mouth was meant to be for the sake of the relationship, not to tell the paparazzi to get lost but using harsher words. He really thought tonight would go smoothly; little did he know that the press knew where he was and when. Sometimes he regretted the career choice as there was no escape from the media.
The journey home was unusually quiet. Kayleigh couldn't take this anymore so she had to talk to him; she hated seeing him mad.
"John is everything alright?" Kayleigh asked uncertain of how he would reply back.
"Yeah, sorry about this evening," John said looking at Kayleigh.
"It's alright, it wasn't your fault," Kayleigh said whilst rubbing John's shoulder for comfort. It seemed to work; a smile appeared across his face, "So what did you want to tell me?"
"It's not something I can just come out and say," John explained.
"Oh," was all that Kayleigh could say.
"Sorry," John said hoping that he didn't disappoint Kayleigh.
"It's okay," Kayleigh said giving John a sincere smile.
As soon as they got out of the car John put his arm around Kayleigh and led her into the house, showing that there were no hard feelings between the two. Kayleigh happily accepted the gesture. They went into the lounge and sat on the sofa flicking through the music channels. Kayleigh leaned on his shoulder, peacefully, they eventually fell asleep in the same positions.
Chapter 2
Kayleigh woke up, looking around her surroundings, not fully aware of her awakening, she looked at John who was still asleep and smiling. She assumed he was having a nice dream. Kayleigh got up realising that she smelt and went to have a shower. When she came back down, John was still asleep. Quietly, she went out, planning John's birthday some more. She was in the centre going to shops to look for the perfect gift. It is almost 9 o'clock so she headed to work.
Kayleigh's boss, "Ah, Kayleigh!" She turned around holding her design folder, "Have you got the jewellery designs for me?" Kayleigh handed him the designs, he praised her for her dedication and beautiful designs. In return she smiled at him saying thank you. As soon as she got to her office her phone rang, suddenly all her co-workers stared at her. Why? Well because Kayleigh's tone was the Cheeky Girls song. She died of embarrassment, and quickly ran to her office, trying to act normal but it is impossible.
"John!" Kayleigh realised that her phone was still ringing, "Hi John!"
"Hey Kayleigh, sorry about your tone, I forgot how to change it back," Every time he apologised it made it hard to not forgive him as she always seemed to picture his puppy eyes when he apologised, "Anyway I know you're at work but do you want to go out for lunch?"
"Yeah sure, my lunch starts at 1," Kayleigh answered.
"Okay then, see you then!" John answered.
"See you," Kayleigh answered. She closed her phone, and carried on with work, whilst at the same time planning John's birthday.
At one o'clock she waited outside the entrance for John to come pick her up. A mini came and stopped beside Kayleigh, she was about to enter the car but then John came out from his door to open the door for Kayleigh. They went to lunch and talked about work. Kayleigh was still thinking about what was going to be said before the paparazzi interrupted their dinner last night.
John said, "What are you thinking?"
"Hmm...nothing." Kayleigh replied, "Okay what were you trying to say to me at the restaurant lastnight?"
"It's a secret." John said.
"Please tell me?" Kayleigh pouted.
"Okay okay, I was just going to tell you that..." John started.
"That...." Kayleigh said her hand movement telling him to carry on.
"That...well...if...that..I love you," John said, a disappointed face was returned but she wasn't about to get moody because of his sweet words..
"It was meant to be more special but you know," John said.
"Aaawww, you're so sweet," Kayleigh said.
Kayleigh looked at her watch 15 minutes to get to work. John held her hand as they walked to his car. Their hands swung back and forth as they walked. Once again he opened the door for Kayleigh, relieved with himself.
Kayleigh got back too her office thinking about what John had told her. She smiled to herself carrying on with work, trying to kill the hours off. She couldn't help but still think what he could have told her., reciting the words 'Will you marry me?' and other variations of the question. Then the 'Kayleigh Williams' popped into mind. She sat on her desk chair, her head propped up by the palm of her hands, dreaming of the perfect wedding. Come home time, Kayleigh was in her car driving off. As she was about to turn the corner, when a car came swerving into her.
Hours later John's sat nervously in the hospital waiting, I'm watching the clock ticking, same pace, no quicker, no faster. Tapping my feet on the floor in worry. The doctors told me to wait in the waiting area. I can't stay still for one minute, I can't believe this has happened to Kayleigh, my dear Kayleigh. I'm waiting for a nurse, a doctor, anyone to come out of the room. I'm reflecting on yesterday when I was meant to propose to her. Why didn't I? Just because the paparazzi were in my way, but I still could have told her. I want to cry but I can't; I have to stay strong for Kayleigh. Why is it taking so long? Maybe her condition is critical? I really messed it up this time. The door opened slightly, a happy feeling appeared but only to be crushed again. The door closed. Must have been the breeze. I can't wait anymore I have to see her. Maybe as soon as I see her I should tell her. No she needs her rest. What if she thinks I'm not going to commit to her, she'll hate me. I'm confused don't know what to think.
Kayleigh lies on the bed thinking, the doctor's say I'm lucky because I come out of a car crash with just cuts, bruises, a sprained neck and a nose bleed . They told me that a man is waiting outside for me, I'm sure it's John. I hope he's not worrying. Though, I would love to see him. Great, his birthday is next week and I'm here stuck in the hospital. I'll be here for two weeks so they can monitor my health. I can't stand not being able to go hug away all my pain. I'm hospital bound, it's been less than a day and already the feeling of not being able to be with John when I want is eating me up inside. I'm starting to get tired but I want to see John.
John sighed in relief Finally, I can go see Kayleigh but what do I say to her? Shall I tell her? I've been thinking about it for the past hour. Yes. No. Yes. John walked into the room Kayleigh was in. He looked at her as she slept, not like she usually does. Usually a smile appeared on her face, he couldn't help but think that he could have helped her. The doctors were blunt in her condition. He was told nothing, they just walked straight passed him. He thouht she was in a coma, dreaming about John. He sat on the chair next to her bed, holding her hand. She breathed quite heavy. All that could be heard were his inner thoughts. He wished it was him in the car crash rather than her. He held her hand praying that he would be able to have her in his arms again, instead of her stranded on the bed with no place to go. However, he soon realised that she was just sleeping because the grip of her hand tightened, she must have been having a nightmare. John soothed her grip by massaging her hand with a light circular movement with his thumb. The doctors said that I should go home and get some rest but being with Kayleigh lets me know that she's okay. I look at her hoping that she'll wake up now but she was always a heavy sleeper.
When Kayleigh woke up she saw John asleep. She decided not to disturb him so she slowly and quietly got up to go to the bathroom. When she returned John was awake but still in sleep mode. She couldn't get over how cute he looked when he was sleepy. After a big yawn John got up and went to give Kayleigh a big hug. A hug which had more meaning than words.
"Ow, my neck! My neck!" Kayleigh said, she felt stupid with the neck brace.
"Sorry, I'm just really happy that you're here," he hugs here once again but this time gently. I'm over the moon that Kayleigh is awake, I don't know what I'd do without her. The only downside is that she won't be out until 2 weeks. She's going to miss my birthday but as long as she's okay I'm happy. My birthday means nothing to me compared to Kayleigh. John kissed Kayleigh goodbye as he had to leave for practice but he decided he would visit later. He huged her one last time before he left.
At practise Danny covered his noise, "Phwoar, mate you stink, it wouldn't kill you to wash," he said to John wafting the smell away.
"I've been at the hospital," John said whilst laughing at Danny's reaction.
"So how is Kayleigh?" Danny asked, concerned.
"She's-" John started but then was rudely interrupted.
"Hey," Joey said ruffling John's hair, "How's Kayleigh?" he asked looking at Danny after the question only to be greeted with a scolding look.
"Haha, she's great thanks." John replied.
They all turn around when they heard someone yelling at them, "Oi, get practicing!. Except you John, I need to talk to you." Mathiew says. Danny and Joey look at John not pleased. "So m'boy is Kayleigh okay?"
"Yeah, she's great thanks." John replied looking behind Mathiew to see Danny and Joey pulling rude gestures at him and fooling about. As soon as Mathiew saw this he turned around. They immediately got back to practice before he checked.
"Anyway, if you miss some practice sessions to be with Kayleigh, I completely understand." Mathiew said placing a hand on John's shoulder like a lieutenant.
"Thank you Sir," John said sincerely.
It was two days before John's birthday. This whole surprise party doesn't seem to be going to plan. John is insisting on being in the hospital with me rather than have a birthday. All his family and friends will be there as well. I'm repeatedly telling him to go out with his mates but he wants to be with me. It's really sweet of him but I'd rather he have a birthday than say cooped up in a hospital. As I am not allowed to leave this room I have written messages to Danny and Joey to help set up the party. Basically, the surprise party will be held at his home and then everyone will go to Liquid - a night club - which has been rated highly I'll have to make sure only people with invitations enter.
John looked around warily, everyone has been acting civilised around me, I'm a bit scared. Anyway I'm planning my proposal to Kayleigh I think I'll do it on my birthday but only I know, the other guys can't keep a secret to save their lives. I've got it all planned, the ring, the location, everything. It would be a great surprise. Now all I have to do is ask the doctors if she can come out for that one night. It would be the greatest present if she said yes. If she says no...well...let's not go there. Time to see Kayleigh in the hospital.
Kayleigh smiled, I've got everything sorted, I have begged the doctors to let me out for John's birthday. They have finally given in and said yes but I told them not to tell John as I want to surprise him. I'm over the moon at the moment.
John noded at the doctor, I have been informed of Kayleigh's health, they say that she is fine but she'll need to stay in hospital for her blood transfusion. After the transfusion she will need to recuperate. That's strange, I was told that she only lost a little blood. Nothing excessive. John walked into the room, giving Kayleigh a kiss, "How are you?"
"I'm very happy," Kayleigh replied 'Ooh better not give too much away.' She thought to herself. John handed her a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolate, "Aaaawww thanks John but you really don't need to get me flowers every time you visit, chocolate will do thanks" She gave him a cheeky smile, "Just kidding, they're gorgeous." "Oh by the way my family say hi!"
"Even your dad?" John asked already knowing the answer.
"Erm...yeah?" Kayleigh said.
"Doubt that very much!" John replied. Just remembered that I have to ask Kayleigh's parent's permission to marry her. Well this isn't going to go down too well. This is a little set back but I'm sure it'll all workout. Hopefully anyway.
Chapter 3
John parked his car on Kayleigh's parents' driveway. Having switched the engine off he looked at the house and took a deep breath. Her mum was okay with him but it was the dad's opinion he feared. He walked to the door, taking another deep breath. As his hand came towards the door it stopped a few millimetres away from the handle. Please, please, please, let it be Kayleigh's mum who opens the door. He quickly knocked twice praying it was the mother.
The door opened, "Hello, John!" Kayleigh's mum said.
"Afternoon Mrs Phillips," John replied, greeting her with a nod on the head. Phew.
"Please call me Cecile." She asked.
John nodded his head to gesture okay, "Is Mr Phillips home?"
"Yes, he's in the living room," Mrs Phillips replied.
Damn. As John walked into the Phillips's house anxiety grew. Sweat started running down John's face. He wished he could turn back because he really didn't think he would get 'Daddy's' blessing. He was now facing the lounge entrance. Taking another deep breath he came face to face with Kayleigh's dad.
"Afternoon Mr Phillips," John said, facing the side of Kayleigh's dad's face.
"Hm," Mr Phillips replied. John knew instantly that this wasn't going to go down too well. Mr Phillips turned around from the TV, "So what do you want?"
John couldn't find the words to tell him, "I...er...I was wondering..um...if...ificouldhaveyourapporvalofmarryingKayleigh" John said in one breath.
"What?" Kayleigh's dad said.
John could tell that he heard but he decided not to back chat. Tension grew between the three people, "I was wondering if I could have your approval to marry Kayleigh."
Kayleigh's mum said, "'Course you can John," she smiled.
But Kayleigh's dad said, "Absolutely not!"
"Bill!" Kayleigh's mum said giving Kayleigh's Dad the evils.
"No, that is my final answer and I would much appreciate it if you two just ended things," Mr Phillips said whilst facing the TV.
"Please Mr Phillips I love her," John said in a pleading voice.
"Love her, do you seriously think that love is like that whore you were with?" Mr Phillips screamed, "Kayleigh is not being dragged into that sort of thing. Lords knows what goes on in your head."
As soon as Mr Phillips brought up those that statement all flash back of the news came flooding back to John.
"Bill! John is a good kid. He's kind, thoughtful..." Mrs Phillips said before being interrupted.
"Puh, thoughtful? Does he really take into consideration Kayleigh's feelings?" Mr Phillips said.
"But..." John started.
"Kayleigh is not getting married yet and certainly not to you," Mr Phillips said.
John knew it was his time to leave. Mrs Phillips walked him out. "Sorry about that," She said with her head pointing in the direction of the lounge.
"It's okay, well I better go, bye," John turned away before he heard...
"
He walked out the door, the words 'She deserves better' constantly being repeated in his head.
John combed through his hair in frustration, great, her dad thinks I'm a pervert. I'm hating my life more and more. Do I deserve Kayleigh? If things stay as they are Kayleigh may have no family left. Her father will hate her if she married me. But maybe he will change his mind when he sees how the marriage goes. Doubt that. John brought out his phone, scrolled down through his contacts to Kayleigh's number. He wanted to press the telephone number but couldn't get himself to. He stood there looking at his phone. Never had he though it would turn to this because things were meant to be different, but he had no choice.
Chapter 4
John pressed call and slowly put the phone to his ear. Each ring made him more nervous from the last. He tried to hold back the nerves but it was no use. The fact that Kayleigh's voices did not answer made things no better. Still no answer from Kayleigh instead it was the answer phone. He decided to call her later as he needed to get to practise.
"Hey John! What's wrong?" Joey asked, running over to John.
"Nothing, why?" John asked back, kicking the football around with his feet.
"Is it about Kayleigh?" Joey asked.
"Am I being that obvious?" John asked.
"So do you want to tell me about it?" Joey asked.
"I don't know," John replied
"Come on, you can tell me anything - just about," Joey stated.
After a bit of persuasion, John started to explain, "Okay, well, I was going to propose to Kayleigh on my birthday..."
"You were going to propose?" Joey asked but then John gave him the you-wanted-to-know-so-let-me-tell-you look, Joey cleared his throat "So then,"
"Well, then I thought that I should ask her parents for permission..." John said.
"Oh the dad," Joey interrupted again, "Oh sorry mate, carry on."
"So I went there this morning her mum said yes but her dad said...well...how can I put this..." John said thinking of a better way then what was actually said.
"No?" Joey asked.
"Yeah...basically but it was harsher than that." John said.
"Oh, well to be honest I think you should still ask Kayleigh because it is blatant that you two love each other," Joey said.
"Yeah...that's the thing...he said she deserves better and well I don't know what I should do. What do you think?" John asked.
Danny walked over, looking tired, "Alright lads?" Joey and John nodded their heads, "So what you talking about?"
"John was just saying..." Joey started to say but then John elbowed him on the side, "um...that I should have my hair back the way it was... before."
"Yeah you should, it looks awful," Danny laughed.
"Cheers," Joey replied not looking too impressed.
Danny jogged back around as he was being called back by Alan. Joey turned back to John,
"Well to be honest John, it's your choice. Only your opinion should matter at this point...but...I think you should just ask her to marry you."
"Yeah but I'm worried, I don't want her to deceive her own father," John said. Mathiew looked to their direction so John and Joey quickly practised, whilst still talking.
"Has her father taken the chance to know you?" John didn't answer, "John you are a great guy - not that I'm trying to hit on you or anything - and you and Kayleigh are perfect; don't ruin this for the both of you just because of one person."
"Thanks," John said and gave Joey a man hug.
After training John couldn't help but think all day what he was going to do as he only had until seven - when he was meeting Kayleigh for dinner. Minutes and hours went by as John was listening to his music, he got changed and did his hair. When a knock came on his door, he looked at the mirror one last time. Must be Kayleigh he thought to himself. He shut his hi-fi, walking down the stairs whilst fixing his hair. He stood in front of the door and opened it to reveal Kayleigh, who had the biggest smile on her face, happiness written all over it. This was going to be a lot harder than John thought. He hated disloyalty which would make him hypocritical but he loved her and couldn't let this happen.
"Hey John," she said entering the house, and gave John a peck.
"Hey," he said returning a hug.
They walked into the car, driving off to the restaurant. John kept looking at Kayleigh, smiling to himself, but a smile of doubt. As they walked into the restaurant they were escorted to a VIP area. They ordered their drinks.
"John?" Kayleigh said taking a sip of her drink.
"Yeah?" John said looking up at her.
"Is there something you want to tell me?" Kayleigh asked.
"Why do you think that?" John replied.
"It's just...you've been really quiet," Kayleigh said.
"Um...yes...but...it's kind of...hard to say," John said.
"Just tell me. What's wrong?" Kayleigh asked holding John's hand.
"I don't know how to say this..." John said.
Kayleigh pulled a comforting smile towards him.
"Ok...well...I think we should ...um..." John started to say but couldn't find the right words to express it, he looked up from Kayleigh and back down to the table, "...um...end things,"
"What?" Kayleigh said hoping her hearing was deceiving her.
"I don't think we can be together anymore," John said softly but loud enough for Kayleigh to hear.
"Why?" Kayleigh asked letting go of John's hands which she once could not let go of.
"I just don't think...we just can't," John said fumbling with the words. Avoiding eye contact as he did not want to see what he had just done but he could still hear weeps from Kayleigh. He felt the tears streaming down her face onto her table. Each tear drop felt like a stab in the heart. It was killing him inside. Now he had to walk away from something which he thought was best. He approached the exit, "I'm doing this because I love you." Those were John finals words. Tears descended his cheeks.
Chapter 5
Kayleigh walked home, only one expression on her face, depression, but she could see the hurt in John's eyes when he broke up with her. Now her emotions changed from sadness to anxiety.
A couple of weeks had passed and Kayleigh was still upset about the break up. It even resulted to illness, all she did since was sleep, watch TV, wash and cry. She didn't go out, she hadn't seen Jane or spoken to her unless she was calling off sick. Jane was worried but couldn't do anything, every time she offered Kayleigh help and comfort, Kayleigh would reply, "It's okay, I'm fine."
John was sad but at the same time angry with himself for doing this, as Jane told him that Kayleigh hadn't left the house in ages. Danny tried to cheer John up but it seemed like nothing could. No one else knew but Danny, and he swore not to tell. To make things worse John was so depressed that his performance changed, the press and some fans were questioning John's commitment.
On the next practice day Mathiew decided to fix the small situation, "Danny!" Mathiew called out.
"Yes?" Danny said trotting towards Mathiew.
"What is wrong with John?" Mathiew asked.
"Nothing, why?" Danny asked.
"Well he doesn't seem his usual self," Mathiew said looking towards John who was just moping around, not paying attention to what he was doing.
"Well you know he has been through a lot over the last few months, with playing non-stop and the allegations and all that, maybe it's still hitting him hard," Danny said trying to avoid telling him the real reason.
"Okay then thanks," Mathiew said not completely convinced and patted him on the back.
Danny ran over to John, "Hey John."
John said staring at the ground, "Hey."
"Look, everyone's worried about you please just go talk to Kayleigh," Danny said knowing that John wanted to.
"I want to b...but I hurt her. Why would she talk to an idiot?" John said still making no eye contact.
"You're not an idiot...well...anyway...I'm sure she wants to talk to you. She was smitten by you...now who wouldn't love that," Danny said trying to put a smile on John's face but only a small lop-sided smile appeared but even then that quickly vanished.
Why did he break up with me? Kayleigh thought to herself. All tears stopped immediately. She now had no reason to cry, well, not right now anyway. She thought about whether or not to call him. Then she realised she needed to know why so she picked up her mobile to ring John.
After practice John went home avoiding family members. He dropped his bag on the floor and sat at the end of his bed, his head was moulded by his hands. Then John's mobile rang, he looked at the caller ID, Kayleigh, he wasn't sure whether or not to pick it up. She probably only rang to say that she hates me and hopes I die John thought, Don't blame her I hate myself right now.
Once he didn't pick up Kayleigh questioned, "Maybe I should ring his house phone?"
The house phone rang; he didn't feel like talking to anyone right now. After a minute the answer phone came on, "Hey, I'm not able to take your call right now but please leave a message and I'll call you back soon. See ya!" The phone beeped.
"Hey John, it's Kayleigh...I need to talk to you...please...meet me at the park," Kayleigh said in a pleading voice.
John contemplated on whether or not to meet her, after all he did break her heart.
Kayleigh was sitting on the bench, waiting for John...five minutes had gone. He was late, maybe he wasn't coming but she decided to wait another ten minutes. Hope was fading. There was no sign of John. She got up ready to walk back home until someone grabbed her arm.
"Kayleigh?" a voice said quietly.
"John," Kayleigh said, "Oh, Danny it's you."
"Cheers," Danny said realising that it was not the right time to joke.
"Sorry," Kayleigh said not facing Danny completely.
Danny didn't reply he just gave Kayleigh a friendly hug. Kayleigh tried so hard to hold in the tears but her emotions got the better of her, "There, there," Danny said sitting Kayleigh on the bench.
After a while Kayleigh stopped crying and looked towards Danny, "Thanks Danny, I really needed that."
"It's okay, do you want to tell me what's been going on?" Danny asked her and so she told him. "There's something you might want to know but I swore to John I wouldn't say anything to anyone," Danny said scratching the back of his head.
"Please tell me, I promise I won't tell John about any of this," Kayleigh said tears watering her eyes.
"Okay well?" Danny told Kayleigh about him asking for permission for her hand in marriage. Though he didn't know everything he told Kayleigh that basically her Dad said no.
"So this was all because of my Dad?" Kayleigh asked.
Danny just nodded. They both heard footsteps; they turned away from the conversation and looked towards the sound.
John approached with his hands in his coat pocket.
"John?" Kayleigh said rising from the bench. When she saw that it was definitely John she ran over to him and hugged him tight.
John just stood there not knowing how to take it. After a while he hugged her back. He looked up at Danny and smiled at him. Danny didn't know how to take that smile, giving John a funny look. John mouthed to him 'I'm going propose to her' Danny mouthed back 'What?' John rolled his eyes, without Kayleigh noticing he brought a black box out from his pocket and opened the box to reveal the ring. Danny smiled.
"Kayleigh?" John said withdrawing from the hug so they were face to face.
"Yes?" Kayleigh said.
He took her by the left hand knelt down on one knee, Kayleigh looked shocked. The setting was perfect, a dark sky and surroundings only lit up by the stars. The moon's reflection bouncing off the lake, the beautiful horizon and the sound of water lightly flowing creating a tranquil ambience, "Kayleigh I know I hurt you but it killed me inside when we weren't together I couldn't picture myself with anyone but you. Will you do me the honour of marrying me?" With that he opened the little black box, revealing a ring that Kayleigh could only dream about.
Kayleigh couldn't answer, she looked stunned, nothing had sunk in, "I..." Was this all too soon? Would it last? Kayleigh couldn't answer.
Chapter 6
Kayleigh couldn't believe what was happening. They were madly in love, then John decides to end things with her and now he's proposing to her and they haven't even got back together. John knelt there hoping that Kayleigh would say yes. No words released from her mouth. He was starting to get worried. Danny sat there praying and hoping.
"John..." Kayleigh said, John looked into her eyes intently, "I would love to marry you," Kayleigh finished saying and then smiled at John.
This time John was stunned. When he finally snapped back to reality he slid the ring on Kayleigh's finger. He stood up lifted Kayleigh and swung her around. He felt like the luckiest man on earth. As soon a he put her down they both went in for a hug. After a couple of minutes they waved for Danny to come the celebration.
"I've got to go tell Jane!" Kayleigh said grabbing her mobile. All John and Danny heard were two girls screaming.
It was planned that the date of the wedding would be April, Kayleigh's birthday. Kayleigh and John decided it would be best if they had a wedding planner as neither of them had time to do it all themselves and had never done it before.
For the weeks they were engaged it was hectic; Kayleigh had to plan for a jewellery show and John was busy with flying back and forth. They hadn't seen much of each other and when they did they were both too tired to go out. Stress was building up every day as they didn't have time for one another or the wedding plans.
The week before the wedding Kayleigh was growing frustrated as neither her nor John was notified of the plans. Kayleigh didn't even know what her bouquet was going to look like. Numerous times Kayleigh and John had called to check on updates but all Kristine (wedding planner) could say was, "don't worry I'll sort everything out". It was like they had no say on their behalf.
"John? I really don't think this wedding is going to happen," Kayleigh said John looked at her also concerned, "I mean we know nothing about the wedding." Kayleigh said brushing her hair with her fingers in frustration, ?We don't even know where it is, how is it going to look? Have any of our suggestions been taken into consideration? The guest list-"
"Why don't you go out with Jane and I will sort this out," John said.
"I'm sorry. Are you sure?" Kayleigh asked.
"Yes," John said comforting Kayleigh who was close to break down.
"Thank you," Kayleigh said kissing John, "But if you need me just call me."
"Okay," John replied. He called the wedding planner.
Kristine: Kristine.
John: Hi Kristine, have you got anything on the wedding?
Kristine: Don't you worry about it I will sort everything out.
John: Look, Kayleigh is getting stressed about the wedding and we're not happy about the fact that we don't know what's going on!
Kristine: Well...it's all going fine.
John: I'm not paying you all that money just for it to look cheap and tacky!
Kristine: You two are stressing too much.
John: We still have no idea what your planning!?
Kristine: It's looking great..
John: That isn't...never mind...you're fired.
Kristine: But...
With that John cancelled the call. It was a week before the wedding and they haven't even sorted the guessed list. Kayleigh and Jane came back to see how John was doing.
"Hey John!" Kayleigh said as she closed the door.
"Hey Kayleigh, hey Jane," John said.
"Hey," Jane replied.
"Kayleigh?" John said. Kayleigh knew this wasn't going to be good news, "I think we need to find a new wedding planner,"
"Let me guess...you fired her ass off?" Kayleigh said.
"Uh huh," John said. Kayleigh gave him a hug, "But we need a new wedding planner."
"Ah well um...I've been talking...and...I thought Jane could help us sort the wedding," Kayleigh said hoping that John wouldn't get mad.
John looked at Jane, "That is a great idea. Is that okay with you Jane?"
"Wow, really?" Jane asked, Kayleigh and John smiled and nodded, "Aaaww...that's...that's..you guys are amazing."
"And I'd also like you to be my maid of honour,"' Kayleigh stated.
"MAID OF HONOUR WOOHOO. Thanks, you guys are the best," Jane said whilst jumping for joy going hyperactive.
Jane gave Kayleigh a hug and John a huge smile and a thank you. After a couple of minutes Kayleigh and Jane went into the dinning room to discuss the plans, completely forgetting about John. He didn't mind though, he just rolled his eye and watched TV. Kayleigh walked to John who was flicking through the TV channels, "Don't you want to help?"
John though and replied, "I think it would be better if you two planned it as you are better than me at designing and spending."
John laughed.
"Oh really...and how much do you spend for your career?" Kayleigh laughed. John had no answer. Kayleigh laughed more before going back to the dinning room.
Everything had been sorted, from the guest list to the cake. All the guest invitations were sent out, which included, Kayleigh's family members and friends, John's relatives and friends, his colleagues. Although Kayleigh had gone through the rehearsals she was worried about messing up on the big day - when it really mattered. John was amazed by how quickly they had sorted everything out. It took 5 days. He knew never to underestimate women. He put it down to multi-tasking.
She woke up in the morning almost sick. She ran to the bathroom kneeling above the toilet puking. John could hear the puke coming out and squinted before walking to the toilet to see if Kayleigh was ok. She couldn't answer, as she was too busy being sick. Must be stress sickness or wedding nerves.
Kayleigh walked out hunched, John walked her to the bed, "I wouldn't go in there if I were you." Kayleigh said, knowing there was a sick smell lingering in the bathroom.
"I've got practice now, will you be okay because I can always stay?" John asked.
"I'll be fine, I'm sure it will go," Kayleigh replied.
"Are you sure?" John asked.
"Yes, now go, have fun," Kayleigh said using what energy she had to playfully throw a pillow at John, shooing him along.
John ran up to Kayleigh kissing her on the forehead and ran out of the house, "I'm going but call me if you need me." As he walked out the door he blew Kayleigh a kiss.
At practice everyone was congratulating John on his engagement, "Danny!" John called him over, "You told them didn't you?"
Danny nodded innocently, "They were worried, someone had to rest them assure."
"Thanks," John said, giving Danny a man hug.
"Kayleigh!" John called out but no reply came. He jogged upstairs to check if she was sleeping on the bed. The bed was empty. Then he ran back downstairs to the lounge.
"BOO!!!," came sound as John was about to enter the lounge. "Aaaahhh," He screamed when he realised Kayleigh was standing firmly on the doorway.
Kayleigh laughed in hysterics, "Ha ha ha ha ha," she couldn't even stand.
Ironically John was not impressed, "Very funny."
"Haha," Kayleigh couldn't hold in her laugher, "I...knew...I should...have got a camera," she said in between laughs, losing breathe after each laugh. All of a sudden John facial expression changed to a serious but conniving one, she had a feeling he was going to do something and she was not going to like it. He brought his hand up in a claw kind of way, walked slowly towards Kayleigh; she didn't want to know what he was up to so she ran around the house and started to scream.
After hours of reflecting on their younger days, John and Kayleigh collapsed onto the sofa, tired, watching a film.
Kayleigh got out of bed to make breakfast. John was fast asleep.
Typical she thought to herself. As she was cooking the phone rang, "Hello? Oh hi Dad...I'm fine you?....How's Mum?....Yeah John's home, why?...You want to talk to him?...Okay but don't yell at him, okay?...Good?I'll get him now."
"John?" Kayleigh said standing next to John on the bed.
"Huh?" John said rolling over to his side to face Kayleigh.
"Dad, wants to talk to you," Kayleigh said.
"Huh? Your Dad?" John asked. Kayleigh nodded, "He's not going to give me the third degree is he?"
"I don't know, just please answer," Kayleigh said and went to go downstairs.
"Where are you going? I need you here," John said whilst covering the phone with his palm.
"I can't sorry...the food," then she ran downstairs in a shot.
"Hi Sir," John reluctantly replied.
"Hello John, all I wanted to say was?" Mr Phillips stated.
Here we go John thought to himself.
"Sorry," Mr Phillips said.
Wait this can't be right John thought, "Sorry?"
"Yeah...I shouldn't have said what I did," Mr Phillips said in a sincere tone.
"It's...um...fine. I understand. My...um....dad....was the same with my sister," John said still shocked by the conversation he was having.
"I'm sorry for the way I treated you. I'm sure you'll be the greatest son-in-law anyone could ever ask for," Mr Phillips said, "I hope we can start over?" He asked.
John was shocked by the compliment but eventually answered, "Yeah, that would be great Sir."
"Please call me Dad," Mr Phillips said.
There was a few moments of awkward silence, until Kayleigh came upstairs, "John your breakfast is ready," she shouted as she jogged upstairs listening in on the silence. John put the phone on speaker.
"Okay...well...Son...you take care and I'll see you at you wedding tomorrow. Bye," Kayleigh's Dad said.
"Okay...Dad...see you." John replied as they both ended the call.
"Dad?...Son?" Kayleigh said with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah...I'm still shocked."
Over the day their friends decided to have one big party rather than a separate hen and bachelor party so they went to Raimundo's Ristorante for an Italian meal. The atmosphere, food and company were great. Everyone seemed to have a great time.
It was the day of the wedding, the last couple of days seemed like years. She was ready. She couldn't wait. She was soon to be Mrs Williams. Even though like John she was 20 she knew this would make her happy for eternity.
John woke up, looking towards Kayleigh, which brought a smile to his face. As this was the last time he would see her before the wedding preparations he offered to take Kayleigh out to breakfast one last time before she was officially his wife.
All through the morning and during the journey Kayleigh couldn't wipe the smile off her face.
Kayleigh and her maid of honour (Jane) were getting ready. Kayleigh was getting more nervous by the minute. She knew that she had broken the hearts of all John fans but she knew a majority of them would also be happy for John. The more anxious she grew the more she wanted to get this over and done with. A strange feeling started to occur in her stomach. She took deep breaths hoping that it would just disappear.
It was time to walk down the isle. Jane already had walked down. She linked arms with her dad. Took one last deep breath before walking under the trellis. She walked down the isle, followed by John's sisters who were the bridesmaids and his nephew who was holding a small cushion, which the rings lay on. Her eyes scrolled across the room. All eyes staring at her, which made her feel slightly uncomfortable. She looked towards John, he smiled at her. His smile slightly calmed her nerves.
"Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to join John and Kayleigh in holy matrimony," the Priest said looking at the relatives.
After the vows were said, "Do you John take Kayleigh to be your lawfully wedded wife?" The priest asked looking at John.
This is it
"I...I...I can't," John said, walking out. Shock spread across everyone's face.
Kayleigh stood there - emotionless. Only tears expressing how she felt.
On the wedding day Kayleigh suddenly woke up, hyperventilating from the dream, well nightmare. She went to get changed. She was one of these girls who wondered what dreams meant, whether they were signs or whether they were just a state of mind characterised by abstraction and release from reality. She quickly shook off the questions.
John woke up, stretched his arms and walked downstairs into the kitchen, where she was making breakfast. He walked up to her, giving her a hug from the back and kissed her on the side of the head, "Love you." He said in his sweet and sensual voice.
"Love you too," Kayleigh said and smiled all her thoughts about the nightmare disappeared as soon as she heard those two words.
They were happily eating around the table when John asked, "So what does your dress look like?"
"It's a surprise," Kayleigh said sticking her tongue out playfully.
"Can't you just give me a hint?" John asked, using the puppy face on her.
John's blue eyes always made her melt, usually she would give in but not this time, "Sorry, you'll have to wait," Kayleigh teased and John just smiled.
A couple of hours later and it was time for John and Kayleigh to go their separate ways so they could change into their wedding outfits. Kayleigh got into Jane's car.
"So are you excited?" Jane asked.
"Excited and nervous," Kayleigh replied.
"You two are going to be the greatest couple," Jane said, "I hope I'm as lucky as you in finding the perfect guy."
"Thanks, and don't worry you will," Kayleigh said.
Jane and Kayleigh went to the changing rooms. Her dress was simple but beautiful.
"So how do I look?" Kayleigh asked with a worried tone looking in the mirror.
"You look fabulous and stay calm," Jane said.
"Thanks, you look amazing," Kayleigh complimented Jane.
Jane smiled when a lady opened the door slowly to check that they were decent. Jane said, "We're decent."
"Okay well the groom is ready for you," the lady said and shut the door after her.
"I guess this is it then?" Kayleigh said.
"Yep, well I better go first," Jane stated.
Kayleigh let out a deep breath. Jane hugged her comfortingly, "You'll be great," Jane whispered into Kayleigh's ear. Kayleigh linked arms with her Dad ready to walk out.
It was a garden wedding set out on a Japanese garden. Kayleigh walked down the rose petal covered path followed by John's nephew, who was holding the velvet cushion. Sat elegantly on the velvet cushion were the wedding rings. Kayleigh kissed her dad on the cheek before she stood face to face with John. Her dad joined the guests in the sitting area. John's smile grew bigger as he finally got to see Kayleigh in her dress.
"You look beautiful," John mouthed to Kayleigh.
Kayleigh smiled, "You too."
Then the minister started, "Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to join this man and woman in holy matrimony." He spoke in an authoritative tone, "And if anyone objects to this marriage or knows any just cause as to why they should not be joined, speak now or forever hold your peace."
Kayleigh and John both looked around.
"I object," someone says as they rose up from their seat.
Chapter 7
"Danny?" both Kayleigh and John said.
"Um...Danny can we talk?" Kayleigh asked.
They went into a quiet area. "What was that all about?" Kayleigh asked pointing to the main wedding area.
"I...well...I...um..." Danny stuttered.
"Just tell me," Kayleigh said not in an orderly way but in a talk-out-your-problems way.
"I...think I'm..." Danny stuttered once more.
"...in love with me?" Kayleigh asked completing Danny's sentence.
"Yeah.." Danny smiled, scratching the top of his head, his face turning pink by the second, "How did you know?"
"Female intuition I guess," Kayleigh said, "Anyway...I love you...but...only as a friend," Danny's smile went, "I know you'll find the perfect girl, you're are great guy...I mean if it weren't for you, me and John wouldn't be here but I hope we can stay friends?"
"Friends," Danny replied with a sorry look on this face, "Oh...could we not tell John about this?"
"Sure," Kayleigh said giving Danny a hug, "Don't feel bad okay? It's normal."
"Thanks," Danny said and blushed more at the fact that he did this in the middle of Kayleigh and John's wedding, "Um...the wedding."
Kayleigh and Danny went back to the main wedding area.
"Sorry," Kayleigh apologised to everyone.
"What was that about?" John asked whispering to Kayleigh.
"Nothing, Danny's just a bit drunk. That's all," Kayleigh said.
"Thought his cheeks were a bit red," John stated laughing at Danny.
"Sorry carry on," Kayleigh said to the Minister.
The minister smiled and continued, "If anyone objects to this marriage or knows any just cause as to why they should not be joined, speak now or forever hold your peace."
Kayleigh looked around the guest area, when she saw Danny mouth 'Thank you' to her, she smiled in reply.
"John, do you take Kayleigh to be you lawfully wedded wife for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health till death do you part?" the Minister asked looking John.
"I do," John said, he took the ring from his nephew whilst smiling at him and slipped the ring onto Kayleigh's ring finger.
The Minister turned to Kayleigh,"Kayleigh, do you take John to be your lawfully wedded husband for better or for worse, for richer or for poor, in sickness and in health till death do you part?"
Kayleigh smiled, "I do." Kayleigh then put the ring on John's ring finger.
"Now, with the power invested in me, I'm happy to announce you, husband and wife," The minister said then turned to John, "You may now kiss the bride."
With that John embraced Kayleigh into a hug and kissed her. Everyone rose from their seats and clapped. John picked Kayleigh up and ran. Everyone else followed. When John put Kayleigh down she turned so her back was facing the guests and threw the bouquet of flowers. Jane caught it, she was exhilarated. Kayleigh turned back to John kissing him as the newlywed - Mrs Williams.
